HerStory Awards in Honor of Women’s History Month
On Monday, March 25, 2024, WFWP Dallas hosted an inspiring HerStory Awards luncheon in celebration of Women’s History Month, recognizing three remarkable women from the Dallas area. The event was the culmination of six weeks of dedicated planning by WFWP and Global Women’s Peace Network (GWPN) leaders Ester Davis and Laura Hornbeck, longtime friends and collaborators.
Each of the HerStory Award honorees shared deeply moving and personal stories, capturing the hearts of the attendees:
Dr. Elba Garcia, who has served as Dallas County Commissioner for District 4 since 2010 and previously on the Dallas City Council, captivated the audience with her story of perseverance. After earning her dentistry degree in Mexico, she made the bold decision to immigrate to Texas, where she re-certified and established a thriving private practice in southern Dallas County. As a wife and proud mother of two sons, Dr. Garcia reflected on the challenges she faced, not only as a woman pursuing a career in dentistry but also in her decision to enter public service. She credited her grandmother—her beloved "abuela," who lived to 104 years old—for instilling in her the confidence to follow her dreams and break through barriers.
Ms. Apryl Davis, administrator for Dallas City Council District 14 and substance abuse counselor, delivered a powerful testimony of resilience. As a single mother of two, Ms. Davis spoke candidly about her battle with drug addiction in her youth, a struggle she ultimately overcame with the unwavering support of her parents and the love she had for her children. Today, she not only thrives in her role in public administration but also volunteers for the very counseling program that helped save her life. Her family, including her mother, father, and older son, were present, adding a heartfelt touch to her triumphant story.
Ms. Norma Adams-Wade, a trailblazer in journalism as the first African-American reporter for the Dallas Morning News, shared her incredible journey of shining a positive light on her community through her work. Over the years, she has earned numerous accolades and played an active role in the civil rights movement. With her signature passion and energy, Ms. Adams-Wade inspired the audience with her message of defying limitations, urging everyone to rise above societal expectations and take ownership of their own stories.
The luncheon was attended by 38 guests, many of whom were new to the Global Women’s Peace Network community. It was an ideal opportunity for networking, where attendees exchanged business cards, shared personal experiences, and offered words of encouragement for each other’s endeavors. The afternoon was highlighted by a delicious seafood meal at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen near downtown Dallas, as participants expressed their delight in the inspiring conversations and connections made throughout the event.
