Hello everyone! It’s so nice to meet you. My name is Mira Brown, and am now the Newsletter Editor for WFWP USA! I graduated college a few years ago with a double major in International Studies and Spanish, and a month later I went to China to serve in the Peace Corps. There I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to students in a college for two years. It was a life-changing experience and fulfilled a dream I’d had for a long a time of being a Peace Corps volunteer. I am very grateful to have served in China because it opened my eyes to its beautiful landscapes, warm and welcoming people, and delicious food. While there, I had the opportunity to serve on two committees that produced newsletters to help other Peace Corps volunteers in China. One was Professional Peer Support, for which I shared teaching ideas and lesson plans, and the other was Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, for which I shared articles on issues that women face in China, especially related to what I observed with my own students and the Women’s Group that I created with them.

Although my experience with WFWP began relatively recently, I have long admired the work being done around the world. In the past year or so, I have attended a few events put on by my local California Bay Area WFWP chapter, including their Schools for Africa Fundraiser, and the 2016 WFWP National Assembly in New Jersey. Since last fall, I’ve been doing freelance work designing flyers for various WFWP chapters around the country. I am really looking forward to becoming more involved with WFWP and getting to know the wonderful women involved around the country and world.

Currently, I help students learn ESL at a high school in California. Although I work in a predominantly Caucasian neighborhood, there are about 70 international students at the school, who’ve come from all over the world: China, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, France, Brazil, Venezuela, and Thailand, to name just a few. My passions include travel, arts and crafts, hiking, camping, being outdoors, going to the beach, and spending quality time with people. I love traveling and I’ve been to 21 countries so far, and I hope to visit 30 by age 30! Of the places I’ve been to, my three favorites are Mexico, Vietnam, and Indonesia, although I’ve had wonderful experiences in every place. I also love listening to music, and some of my current favorite artists are Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, Andy Grammer, The Head and the Heart, and Bastille.

I look forward to getting to know you as we work together to spread peace!
