A CELEBRATION OF DIVERSE CULTURES: WFWP CHAPTER KICK-OFF EVENT IN TEXAS
Editor’s note: What a colorful and uplifting start for Wendy Dayagon as a local representative of WFWP in Baytown, Texas (in the Houston area). In August, Wendy partnered with a faith-based nonprofit organization, Women of Worth, to create a fun and meaningful event on the theme of embracing cultural differences. Read on to find out more about her first event.
Before I became a Women’s Federation representative here in Houston, I had already been connected to a local organization called Women of Worth (WOW) and attended several of their events. It is led by pastor couples from Honduras who migrated to our town about five years ago, and the organization itself was launched three years ago. As their values and objectives align with those of WFWP, it became natural to partner up with them.
Every month they hold an event based on a certain theme, and for the month of August WFWP and WOW co-sponsored an event on the topic of “How are we going to handle our differences?” by celebrating a variety of cultures.
On August 23rd, 2019, at a local Christian church that is aptly named the Coat of Many Colors, we showcased delightful dishes and lively dances from the continents of North America and Africa. This included honoring Native American and Mexican traditions as well as a number of African countries through colorful booths that displayed unique artifacts from those nations.
Our guest speaker was Ms. Conception, who was recently recognized as best nurse in a local hospital in the area. She explained how she was able to get along with patients no matter what their race, ethnicity, language or culture. As a token of appreciation, WFWP offered her a bouquet of flowers and then proceeded to announce the winners in a number of categories.
We presented certificates to those who were voted to have the best booth display, most original costume, best food, and most beautiful dance performance. It was a joyful and light-hearted atmosphere and participants expressed their gratitude to the organizers for putting on such a great event.
