WHY YOU SHOULD BE SPENDING MORE TIME OUTSIDE THIS SUMMER
Spring is here, and summer will soon be upon us too, and that means we’re all excited for the ocean breeze, and an ice-cream cone, or two! However, getting outside is much more than just barbeques and beaches. In fact, several studies have shown that spending time outside can actually improve your physical and mental well-being.
Many of us spend hours transfixed by our smartphones, computers, and laptops, or basking in the glow of our television screens. In fact, studies have shown that on average, Americans spend 95% of their time indoors. So we’re hoping to give you a few reasons that will make you want to ditch those smartphones, laptops, and pause your favorite Netflix show!
You’ll feel happier: Time spent outside boosts levels of serotonin (the happy chemical) in the brain. That’s not all – exposure to sunlight or even simply looking at flowers eases depression!
You’ll have lower stress levels: Taking a stroll outside can lower your cortisol levels (a key indicator of stress), helping you feel more calm and positive. In fact, even looking at trees through a window can reduce stress levels! So go ahead and incorporate some mini outdoor adventures into your life.
You’ll see better: Amazingly enough, being in natural light and looking at things that vary in distance actually helps our eyes relax, refocus, strain less, and recover from the hours spent staring at your smartphone or computer screens! For those suffering from dry eyes due to all the time spent in front of the screen, this one’s a game changer.
You’ll focus better: Have you ever got that feeling where you can’t even seem to put a single word on a page, almost like a brain fog? I know I have! Well, I am here to deliver some good news – stepping outside helps restore “attentional capacity,” which is our ability to focus and pay attention.
You’ll have more energy: even a brief 15-20 minute walk outside can give you that boost of energy that you only get after your usual cup of coffee every morning.
So go ahead and turn off that TV, put down whatever gadget you have in your hand, get off your couch no matter how comfortable it may be, lace up your shoes, and get outside!
