Commander Crystal King Smith

Commander Crystal King Smith was awarded one of two HerStory Awards at the Midwest launch of the Global Women's Peace Network on October 18, 2019.

Chicago Police Commander Crystal King-Smith has 28 years of service and is currently in charge of the Force Review Unit. She previously commanded the 002nd Police District on Chicago’s Southside. Commander King-Smith led 290 officers to serve and protect neighborhoods including Kenwood, Grand Boulevard, Douglas Park, Washington Park, Hyde Park, and Bronzeville which contained over 95,900 residents. She started her career in January 1991, as a Patrol Officer, and was promoted through the ranks to Commander in September 2016 after serving in various capacities in Public Housing, Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), Community Policing, the Detective Division, Education and Training Division, Commanding Officer of Senior Services Section, and the Internal Affairs’ Inspection and Auditing Division.

Commander King-Smith holds a Master’s Degree in Public Safety Management from Calumet College of St. Joseph. A native of Chicago, Illinois, she was raised in Englewood and attended Lindblom Technical High school.

She raised three boys Christopher 36, Lance 34, and Kiva Jr. 24 years old. Previous job experiences include work at Sears & Roebuck and Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Illinois.
