Hon. Joy I. Garratt
Hon. Joy I. Garratt was awarded one of three HerStory Awards at the Southwest launch of the Global Women's Peace Network on June 21, 2019.
Rep. Joy Garratt was first elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives in November 2018. Her 25 years of working with teachers, students and families both in the United States and South Korea motivated her to run for office so that she could address and find solutions to the issues facing working families in her state. Thus, improving education, job opportunities, health care, the environment and public safety are priorities.
During her first session, Rep. Garratt passed a bill to provide scholarships for educational assistants to complete their teacher certification coursework. She advocated for legislation to expand community schools, establish open primaries, train and license dental therapists, ensure common sense gun safety measures and fair consumer practices, and finance a number of public safety initiatives. Recently selected as an Early Learning Fellow with the National Council of State Legislators, she is deepening her knowledge of best practices in early childhood learning and care in order to develop innovative programs that can serve New Mexico’s youngest residents. She is a founding member of the bipartisan Women’s Caucus in the State Legislature and will run for re-election in 2020. Rep. Garratt has been a member of WFWP since its founding in 1992. Rep. Garratt and her husband, Dr. Dale Garratt, have been married for 37 years and are parents of one adult son. They live in Albuquerque where Rep. Garratt works as a public school teacher.
