WFWP joins MLK “Marade” in Little Rock, Arkansas
January 20th is a day to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and everything he stood for. MLK Day features parades, lectures, exhibitions and countless other events throughout the nation in honor of the civil rights movement. Residents and visitors of Little Rock, Arkansas filled the streets for the city’s 37th annual MLK Marade, a coining of the words “march” and “parade”.
Members of Women’s Federation for World Peace and youth from the Arkansas Family Church partnered with the Wisdom House Project to ride in the Marade, joining other local organizations with their cars, floats and marching bands supporting various causes.
The Wisdom House is a humanitarian group based in Arkansas that sponsors a women's center and a kindergarten school in Syria, which has been suffering due the devastating civil war there. They send supplies and encouragement to many Syrian families and raise awareness about their situation all over the United States.
We drove a truck decorated with photos of women and children they have been supporting and signs calling for peace and change, and we also held up our own WFWP signs. Throughout the parade, many onlookers echoed the messages we held up and waved or shouted in agreement. Some even asked us to stop, wanting more information about the activities of our two groups.
This event was a wonderful opportunity to connect with people in the community with the same heart of service and heart for peace. All of the participants really enjoyed it and we hope to do more activities like this in the future!
