Please join us in sending our prayers of support for the people of Haiti! After a magnitude 7.2 earthquake on August 14, 2021, the country is facing dire straits. Currently, 1,400 are dead, 6,900 are injured, and hundreds are still looking for their beloved family members and friends who are missing. Our hearts go out to the several thousand who have lost their homes due to destruction or severe damage, leaving many homeless and in desperate need of support.

As a country challenged with severe poverty for decades, Haiti’s emergency response systems and hospitals are not sufficiently equipped to deal with the current situation. This is further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic; hospitals which were already under strain do not have enough personnel and medical supplied to serve the rising number of injuries. Fewer than 1 percent of the population have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine so far, thus creating worries of rising transmission rates as people are forced to gather closer together to receive aid or avoid disaster. WFWP National Chair for Haiti, Mrs. Fujiko Paul, has sent us the following note regarding the situation:

“Thank you for your warm heart! … Currently, the problem in Haiti is that the security of Martissant city [a neighborhood of Port-au-Prince], which connects the capital and the provinces, is very bad. Gangster shootouts are held here every day, and residents are evacuating to other areas. Even in this earthquake, ambulances could not pass because gangs made barricades.

Also, when a doctor from Port-au-Prince tried to go to a rural area for rescue, they could not pass there. In other words, the supplies from Port-au-Prince is 90% likely to be blocked in Martissant city. We are very annoyed by this problem.”

Some of the most immediate needs include water, food, and medical supplies. In the coming month, people will also need materials for repairing their homes. Many aid agencies are seeking unique ways to deliver support in light of the security issues Mrs. Paul describes. If you are able to financially help Haiti at this time, please take a look at some of the organizations below who are currently working on the ground there and consider making a donation. Let us do what we can to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters.

We pray that families can be reunited and those most vulnerable can be rescued swiftly and receive the care and support they need. May God be with those afflicted families and areas at this time of immense crisis!

The King Maker Foundation was established in 2005 by WFWP’s very own member Claire Daugherty and her husband. She and many others volunteer their time to help Haiti through partnering with local organizations in Haiti to help Haitians. How to distribute funds are all made locally. Partners in Haiti are now in need of food, water, medicine and building materials. The King Maker Foundation is run only by volunteers and therefore all the money is sent directly to help Haiti.
