WFWP Ohio Hosts Bridge of Peace Ceremony in Celebration of International Day of Peace

Reported by: Fatou Sarr, Chairwomen, Ohio Chapter

On September 28, 2024, under the cloudy skies of Columbus, Ohio, the local Women's Federation for World Peace (WFWP) chapter held the inspiring Bridge of Peace Ceremony. This signature project of WFWP, which has touched the lives of women around the world for decades, aims to foster reconciliation, healing, and hope.

In honor of the International Day of Peace, 25 participants gathered at the Ohio Family Church with the shared desire to create a fresh beginning. The event was organized by Fatou Sarr, Chairwoman of WFWP Ohio, along with dedicated volunteers, who lovingly decorated the venue to reflect the nurturing heart of a mother.

The program began with welcoming remarks from Chairwoman Fatou Sarr, followed by a beautiful musical performance of the song “Ocean” by Laila Sarr, setting a peaceful tone for the day. The keynote speaker, Marilyn Angelucci, President of WFWP Afghanistan, delivered an inspiring address. She explained the four foundational pillars of the Bridge of Peace: responsibility, respect, repentance, and commitment, urging attendees to put these values into action to create meaningful change in their lives and communities.

Following a demonstration of the Bridge of Peace process, participants were paired with a random match to share personal stories and promises of peace with one another. Each pair then crossed the symbolic Bridge of Peace, exchanging a bow, a hug, and a victorious gesture, creating an atmosphere of joy and connection.

One participant, Dr. Merlinda Iyer, former President of the International Volunteers Organization of Columbus, reflected on the profound impact of the ceremony: "I was so happy because now I have someone I can call my ‘sister’—a bond I’ve never had before."

Our MC, Precious Laurent, was equally moved by the event, stating, “Women’s empowerment is so refreshing, and I am thrilled to see women stepping up to lead.”

Looking ahead, WFWP Ohio is determined to continue building these bridges of peace and reaching out to influential community leaders. Through future events, we hope to inspire more women leaders to adopt the philosophy of peace, moving hearts and minds to create lasting positive change.
