Sagrario Ortiz

Founder of El Poder de Ser Mujer

Born in the Dominican Republic to a family of educators, Sagrario Ortiz showed an early passion for teaching, writing her first poems at just six years old. She is the author of eight books and a devoted mother of four. Her first child, Dostyn Manuel, was a special child who taught her the true meaning of unconditional love, profoundly shaping her perspective on life and the world around her.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Business Administration. Upon immigrating to the United States, she founded El Poder de Ser Mujer (The Power of Being a Woman), an organization dedicated to empowering Latina immigrants in the Washington, DC area. Through her leadership, the organization has helped thousands of Latino immigrants access vital community resources, develop business and financial skills, and build self-confidence and a sense of belonging. In recognition of its impact, El Poder de Ser Mujer was named Organization of the Year 2015 by the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Sagrario’s work has earned her numerous prestigious recognitions, including:

  • Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the Washington, DC metropolitan area by The Power Meter, Tiempo Latino.

  • Honored as one of Telemundo Washington DC’s Achievers for her dedication to educating, empowering, and leading the Hispanic community in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC.

  • Woman of Courage Award (2016) by the Latino Democratic Club of Montgomery County.

  • Recognition from the Maryland Assembly (2015) for her work in the empowerment of Latina women, awarded by State Delegate Marice Morales.

  • Acknowledged for her support of business development in Montgomery County (2019) by Councilmember David Albornoz.

  • Recognized by the Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States for her contributions to women's empowerment and the promotion of literature.

With unwavering dedication, Sagrario continues to inspire and uplift Latina women, helping them recognize their strength, potential, and the power of their voices.
